For my husband’s birthday this year I gave him a 14 gallon aquarium. He loves angelfish so I thought that would be the perfect gift for him. I went to the pet store and bought 2 young fish. One was white and the other was a black and white marble. Angelfish are so graceful. A flat fish with long flowing fins. They do look like angels with flowing robes just moving effortlessly in the water. I had no idea what sex they were, I just wanted two because our tank would not accommodate another angelfish. I did get a Peppered Corie catfish. They are bottom feeders and clean up all the stuff that falls on the gravel. Our little tank was a happy little family until a few weeks ago. I noticed on a Sunday afternoon that the fish were swimming side ways near the filter up-take valve. There is a current there as it sucks up water and then spills out the clean water on the other side. So I was sitting across the room watching them and I told my husband how cute it looked. I thought that they were just playing around, little did I know they were doing serious business. That evening when I went to feed them, I noticed brown bumpy things on the filter intake tube. I said to my husband, “Honey look at this, something is growing on this tube.” He came over, took one look and said, “Oh, that’s eggs!” Our fish were male and female and had started a family! It was a complete surprise. I went to the Internet and read up on angelfish spawning. The really bad thing was that they were on the intake tube of the filter, right where a strong current sucks everything up to get filtered out. So our little baby fish were in grave danger but there was nothing we could do. So, we just hoped for the best. The female was the marbled one named Bolo (our 3 year old named our fish) and the male was the white one named Goodie. Angelfish are semi-aggressive fish. These two seemed calm as a cucumber. They never bothered the catfish and just swam in tandem around the tank. Bolo was very proud of her brood of eggs and stayed close by, cleaning them with her mouth and chasing the catfish away if she thought he was getting anywhere close. Goodie seemed to stay clear of Bolo most of the time. Four days later the eggs became wigglers. We looked at them through the outside of the aquarium with a magnifying glass because they were not much bigger that a couple of grains of sand. It was so exciting to see them wiggle their tales and show sparks of life. Bolo kept faithfully tending them. The female will take them into her mouth and then re-stick them onto the spawning site. This is how they clean any harmful bacteria and keep them healthy. On day 6, one day before they become free swimmers things went down hill. The filament that held the wigglers began to lose some of its stickiness and when Bolo would clean them and spit them out to reattach them to the tube, they didn’t stick and got sucked up into the filter tube. This upset her greatly!! She swam down and started butting Goodie around with her head. He is smaller and docile, a little hen pecked guy. He didn’t fight back. We decided to shut the filter off for a while to give any wigglers that broke away a chance to swim to safety. After about 10 minutes this bothered Bolo and she became more agitated and started fighting with Goodie. She bit his lip and made it swell up. He got mad and swam really fast up to the intake tube and started eating the wigglers!!! It was like he was showing her a thing or two! She didn’t not like that at all. I then got a siphon and drew up the babies that were left and put them into a smaller separate tank that I had set up. Poor Bolo kept going to her empty spawning site and looking it over and them going down to Goodie and cornering him and biting his lip. He couldn’t eat for a couple of days after that. I guess she was telling him, “Oh so you want to eat my babies, I will fix you!!” I told Rich, boy there goes to show you that having children can really cause stress in some people’s marriage! None of the little fish survived. I cleaned Bolo and Goodie’s tank and leaned a long flat slate stone up against one side. That is what angelfish like to spawn on in the wild. They really like their new arrangement and have gone back to being good friends again. Goodie’s lip has healed up and he is eating just fine. So hopefully they have worked through their differences and will raise a family to adulthood. I will get a little netted deal to put the babies in when they are free swimmers. We will see what happens!

Deck the Halls
We had a lot of fun decorating the tree this year. We wanted to cut a few corners money wise so we didn't buy a fresh tree. We just used an artificial tree I purchased at a garage sale a couple of years ago for $3! We liked it so well, I think I may just use this each year. The tree decorating for me is so special as it is a trip down memory lane. I have collected ornaments for over 23 years, each one has a special memory behind it .... a gold bell from my childhood, hand crocheted snowflakes made by my mother, many lovely ornaments we received for our wedding, bear ornaments Rich and I bought the Christmas I miscarried our first baby, angels and navtiviy ornaments from wonderful friends through out the years and now we are adding special ones for Mary each year. To me it is a testimony of what God has done for us and I look forward to the time that I will start telling Mary the stories behind them, that she will always hear of the love and care of our Heavenly Father and that we are so happy to celebrate his son, Jesus' birthday during this season!

We are so Thankful!!
We had a wonderful day yesterday! My sister and brother-in-law came over and shared dinner with us. They fixed the turkey, gravy and bread and we did all the sides. I cut a big bouquet of mums from my garden for the table. I placed a poem on each plate. I read it on Elizabeth's blog and just loved it. You can see it on her post here. We had turkey, ham, stuffing, sweet potatoes, broccoli, mashed potatoes and gravy, jellied cranberries, black olives and homemade bread. For dessert we had pumpkin pie and cherry pie. Our little Mary girl slept through the meal but she woke up to join us for dessert. We had fed her earlier and she fell asleep before we served dinner. We had so much fun just talking about anything and everything! I am very thankful for my family and that we know the Lord!
I hope you had a wonderful holiday too!

Making Music Together
Mary and I have had so much fun over the last 10 weeks attending the Making Music Together Class. Here are a few pictures and video clips of the activities we do in class. Mary gets so much joy out of doing the motions to the songs. It makes my mother's heart so happy to see her enjoy music so much. Music is a very important part of my heritage and my life. I am a music lover from as long as I can remember. I did not have a lot of natural talent but music has always made my soul sing and lifted my spirit to the heavens. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday dear friends. Your friendship and blogs have brought so much joy into my life. God bless you, everyone!

Tutu too!
Mary got a wonderful surprise in the mail yesterday. It was a present from my dear friend, Selina. We took a video of her to send to Selina to say thank you and I wanted to share it with you. Mary is going to love a real dog when she gets older. She just loves this little stuffed dog:)

The Accolade
Last week I got down on my knees and started to clean out the junk under our guest bed. My goal was to clear out some room to put some of Rich's computer stuff under there and give our guests a little more room in the closet! We collect stuff so quickly! I make regular runs to the thrift store with donations but with a little kid you can collect stuff at an exponential rate! Any way, back to my story. As I was clearing out the last of the stuff under the bed, I noticed a small pile of picture frames way in the back. I had to lay flat, get it with my finger tips and pull it out. I was delighted what I found! It was an old frame that held a collection of family snap shots of when I was growing up. I thought, "That is where those photos went to!" Some of them I had given all hope of ever finding. When I lifted that frame up another picture fell down below. My sweet little Mary doll, who was "helping" mama, grabbed it and started studying it. It was a print of a painting that was my husband's. It was nothing fancy, just a print mounted on a piece of foam core with a few small dings in it. I remembered that he had this print in his room when I first started dating him. He had it up above his computer. All he had ever said about it, is that he really liked it. When we got married I packed it up with some other miscellaneous pictures and forgot about it. I became intrigued with it because Mary was so taken with it. All day she would not let it out of her sight. I looked it up on the Internet. It is a painting by Edmund Blair Leighton called "The Accolade" painted in 1901. When Rich got home that night I told him about finding the picture and how Mary was in love with it. I asked him when and where he got it. He said "Oh when I started working for Gitti in the fall of 2000, I found it out in the dumpster behind her shop. I really liked it and took it home. I realized that that was just 6 months before we met. The picture is of a man being dubbed a knight by a beautiful young maiden. I looked up the meaning of "accolade" and it said this: accolade n 1. strong praise or approval; acclaim 2. an award or honour 3. (Historical Terms) the ceremonial gesture used to confer knighthood, originally an embrace, now a touch on the shoulder with a sword. It also said it had to do with some one taking a stand or sticking their neck out for what was right and true. It has a very virtuous connotation. I told Rich that that picture fit what was going on in his life when he found it. He had known the Lord all his life but 4 years before I met him, he made a much stronger and closer commitment to God. He had left all his material possessions behind except his truck and the clothes on his back. He came home, lived with his parents, got completely out of debt, found a church home and served actively there. He had given up his old lifestyle of smoking and mild drinking. He then rented a house with another Christian brother. He became totally committed to God. Four years after that crossroad in his life, we met! The Lord is so good! Mary went to bed that night saying how much she liked that picture and what a great picture it was! Here it is:
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord. Isaiah 55:8

All in a Nut Shell
Our neighbor has a very large walnut tree. Part of it hangs over our driveway. This year it had a bumper crop. Mary and I picked up a bowl full every day when we went to check our mail. She called them rocks! It was kind of like hunting for Easter eggs. Some were hidden in the leaves and sticks. She had a lot of fun. We ended up getting a huge sackful. It came out to 4 pounds of raw nuts. I have spent the last 3 weeks shelling a bowl full of nuts in the evening. Mary is fascinated by it and wants to help. Oh course she is too small to crack them, though she did try! I just let her scoop the shells into a big bag. She also would pull the unshelled nuts out and count them and put them in a big pile on the table. Calling it a rock tower:) Well I finally finished shelling all the nuts and have them in 2 big zip lock bags. I made sugared nuts out of them. I found this really good and easy recipe. I will post it after the pictures. Shelling these walnuts brings back memories for me. There were several walnuts trees near my childhood home. They were along the main road and were public domain. So my dad took us kids down there and had us climb up into the limbs and shake the nuts down onto a tarp. Then back at home we would help my dad crack them and mom would use the walnuts in all kinds of holiday treats! She really enjoyed getting those nuts!
Here is the recipe for sugared nuts:
Ingredients:
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon water
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 pound raw nuts such as: pecans or walnuts
Preparation:
Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Beat (with fork) egg white and water in large bowl. Combine sugar, salt, cinnamon in resealable bag. Shake. Place nuts in egg mixture. Drain back into bowl with slotted spoon. Shake in bag. spread out in foil-lined pan. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes.
If doubling, do one half at a time, but bake all at once.

My Big Bed
We had some excitement around here today! We took Mary's crib out of her room and put in a big bed for her. It was little sad as I was taking down the bumper pads and crib bedding to be washed and put in the give away basket in our spare bedroom. My baby girl is growing up. I remember how small she looked in there when she started sleeping in it at 2 months of age and how excited I was when she pulled herself up in it for the first time at 8 months old. Many milestones have passed and now a new one is made ... sleeping in a big bed. She just loves it and was so excited to take her nap in it this afternoon. Here a few shots of my little monkey in her bed.

Something New
I went to Fred Meyer's yesterday to pick up a few grocery items to tide us over until Rich gets paid and I can do some serious shopping to stock our shelves. I just decided to peruse by the garden department. There in the back was quite a few lovely orchid plants. I have admired orchid plants many times but always kept from buying them because of the price combined with my lack of knowledge on growing them. But these orchids were only $10! Usually they are twice as much if not more. So, I took the plunge and bought one. It is a beautiful phalaenopsis orchid. I read up on the care of it. It likes humidity so I put it by our aquarium. Also we get a lot of bright indirect light there and that is what they like. I will need to set the pot down in water and let it soak for 5 minutes and then let it drain completely. I will need to do this whenever is shows signs of drying out. I am hoping I will be successful. The flowers are so majestic and elegant. We will see. If you have any tips on growing them please leave me a comment. Have a wonderful day!

This Halloween
Mary had a lot of fun this weekend. We were going to go to the mall and have her trick or treat at the different stores but Rich had had a very busy and hard week at work. So, we decided to stay home. We ended up taking her to about 6 houses in our neighborhood. We have some really sweet neighbors and Mary had so much fun. It was her first time trick or treating. She just got so excited when we knocked on the door. She just stood there hopping up and down and then said, "Trick or Treat!" when they opened the door. Each person just smiled at her and said how cute she was! She got a couple of big handfuls of candy which was plenty for a 3 year old. She talked about it all evening and kept counting how many pieces of candy she got. I just love the simple joys of a child. Here is a slide show of her Halloween this year.
