Mary's First Pony Ride

Mary got her first pony ride on Saturday. She was thrilled! The first picture is an edited photo I made. I changed the back ground to make it look like she was out on a farm. I love the expression on her face. This is when they first set her on the pony. When they took her off on her little ride. She shouted, "Ye Ha!" Everyone laughed. She got to pet the pony's nose at the end of her ride. She just loves horses and ponies!

The Last Days of Summer

The last days of summer are here and I am so happy. This is my favorite time of year next to Christmas:) My poor hubby hates summer not because of all the nice weather and bar-b-ques but because it is hot. He has worked in air conditioning and commercial refrigeration repair for many years. It requires working up on roofs and in attics and many hard to get to places. There are many trips up down a ladder in horrible heat. He has said many times that he loves seeing summer die! I always smile at him with compassion but I still love the last days of summer. Everything in my garden is producing so well. All the plants roots systems are well established the nights are getting cooler but there is still plenty of sunshine so they plants blooms and fruits are just busting. I also love the change in the slant of the sun that is whispering to me that fall will be here soon. Always a sense of joy and anticipation comes over me when I go outside into my garden. I went out last week and took a bunch a pictures of my flowers, berry plants, tomatoes and peppers and put together a slide show. I am hoping it will capture my feeling for these last days of summer!

Mangia Bene'

Mangia Bene' ! Eat well! We have been doing a few fun food activities with Mary. The other day we made a homemade pizza. I make the dough in our bread maker and then we put all the toppings on. This was Mary's first time to help and she had so much fun. I think she is going to like to cook but that is no surprise as both Rich and I really like cooking! The next thing we did was to visit a bakery and buy some yummy doughnuts. There was an episode on T.V. with Curious George that had him going to bakery and ordering doughnuts. I realized that I had not done that with Mary. In fact, Rich and I had not bought doughnuts since we moved to Oregon 5 years ago! So Mary had never had a doughnut. Sounds pretty strange but when I was telling Rich about it I said I guess it was because we had our fill of doughnuts when we left California. The church that we attended down there and I was secretary at had a doughnut counter on Sundays. For years I did the order for that ministry and there were always boxes of left over doughnuts in the office each week. So, I guess we got doughnutted out:) We didn't really even stop and think about doughnuts any more. Well to say the least, Mary was so excited to go and pick out a doughnut. I got several kinds and we had them for dessert last night.

The last thing I want to share is about the hail storm we had here a couple of days ago. It had been quite hot and then the sky got really dark and about 3 pm it began to rain. Me oh my what a storm! You can see the hail stones that fell. I also have included a video of the hail falling out our front door. I had not seen hail that big in my whole life! I am thankful we were all home and safe and sound. Mary sure got a kick out of seeing the hail. She ran and got her toy camera and took a bunch of pictures too:)

Kid Time

Mary had so much fun this last week. She had a play date with her friend, Mady. We went to this great place called Kid Time. It is a little kids dream with all kinds of fun stuff to do, plus a craft. I think I might be getting a membership for this place for her birthday. It will be such a great place for us to go in the winter when it is cold and grey outside. My Letters

Mary has been watching this show, Word World on our local PBS station and she loves it. It teaches children to read phonetically using a lot of imagination and fun! She loves it so much that she has learned all her letters and their sounds and she has started reading and she is not even 4 years old. I took her to a toy store and bought her a set of uppercase and lowercase wooden letters. She was so excited to get them that she could hardly wait to get home and play with them. She loves to spell words with them and carry certain letters around with her like they are her little friends. Yesterday I gave her a pen and paper and without any example set before her she wrote her name for the first time! I would highly recommend this show to anyone who has a toddler and would like to introduce them to reading and writing at an early age. Here are a few pictures of her with her letters.

Special Delivery

When we got back from the river on Saturday, there was a large package on our door step. We brought it into the garage and made the salsa and pie before we opened it. It was a bike for Mary! Mary was so excited because she had been wanting a bike for a while now. She was riding her little tricycle but her knees were hitting the handle bars. Money has been a little tight because of us starting up our lamp business. We have had enough to cover our expenses but not any for extras. So I was looking at garage sales hoping to find her a nice used bike with training wheels. I had not mentioned this to any of my friends and I got an e-mail from a very dear friend and she said she wanted to order a bike for Mary and send it to us but wanted to check with us first if that was OK. I was so excited! It is not only a bike but it has a pony head and tail and Mary loves horses. So Rich pulled it out of the box and put on the handle bars, peddles and training wheels. Mary was so surprised. I didn't tell her anything about it until we got it out of the box. She loves it so much. She sat on it all evening and watched TV and she would of taken it to bed with her if she could. I have posted some pictures and a video.

Some Salsa and a Pie!

As I mentioned in my last post that we had a really big day on Saturday. After we came back from the river, Rich picked some hot peppers from our garden and made salsa. He likes all things spicy so his salsa is hot!

We have two kinds of peppers. The little red ones were the hottest.

Here it is cooking. It smells so good.

Then he canned most of it. He made a small batch this time.

We didn't find any ripe blackberries at the river. So, on the way home we stopped at the store and bought some blackberries and I made a pie after Rich was done with his salsa.

Down by the Riverside

Saturday we went to the river in the morning and had such a great time. We had plans of picking black berries for a pie but they weren't ripe. We did have a lot of fun fishing and Mary had a blast throwing stones into the river. I'm sure that didn't help Rich on his fishing! Ha We had a light lunch and a nature walk and just a great time watching the river and being with each other. This is a special place for me as I was baptized here in the river as a teenager and we thought it would be cool if Mary got baptized here when she is older! We stopped at the store on the way home and bought some blackberries and I baked a pie. It sure was good! We did a couple of other things that I will be sharing in the next few post. It was a full and fun day!
