The Imaginations of a Child

Mary always surprises and entertains me with her vivid imagination.  She quickly puts into role play, books she reads and movies she watches.  We checked this book out of the library a couple of weeks ago.  I have read it to her several times.  Two nights ago before going to sleep she told me how she was a big girl now and wanted to do a dog wash using real dogs!  I laughed and told her we would see about it in the morning.  When she got up the next day, I told she would have to wait until she was a big girl before she could have a dog wash for real dogs but she could wash some of her stuffed dogs.  She was thrilled.  So I set her up in the bathroom with her dog wash and she did it all herself while I finished cleaning the kitchen up from breakfast.  She did a great job and got her little dogs squeaky clean!  Here is the book and a few shots of her Great Dog Wash.

She got this video last week and has watched it several times each day.  This is such a cute story and it was produced by Disney 70 years ago.  Sweet stories are timeless.

I helped her make a paper circus tent

A circus mask

and this is her famous circus dog!

Here is a video of his first performance.  I love Mary's Ring Master voice!  lol

Frisbee

Mary and Mac had a lot of fun the other afternoon playing with Mary's Frisbee.  He is funny.  He is so little and loves to carry big things and he is fast too.  We call him White Lightenin' when he has got something that we are trying to get from him.  If Mary tries to chase him, it tickles her so and she starts giggling and giggling.  I finally got her to stand still and ask Mac to drop the Frisbee and wait until he did and then pick it up.  It worked much better that way and he was a good sport and would drop it and then use his nose to push it over to her.  Here is a little video of all their fun.

Our Married Tree

Our avocado tree is flourishing!  Rich started this tree from a pit a few weeks after we were married.  It's beauty and strength to flourish is a reminder to us of our marriage and God's blessing in our lives.  This tree is 8 1/2 years old and has had a lot of things happen to it.  When Rich put the pit in the water it sent down roots right away but the leaves would start to come up and wither, this happened several times and I was about ready to give up on it.  Then we got the bright idea to cover the jar with paper to make the roots have darkness and it worked!  Up came the a big beautiful leaf stem.  When it reached 8 inches high we took the plunge and cut it down to 4 inches taking all the leaves.  I didn't have the courage to do it, so I had Rich do it.  This caused it to branch out and form a beautiful tree shape instead of just going straight up.  Then we planted it in a pot.  We lived in S. California at the time so we put it outside and it flourished into a beautiful little tree.  Then in 2005 we moved to Oregon.  We had it outside for while but when the temps began to drop we brought it into our bedroom in the condo we were living it.  It was a northern exposure, not getting much light so we put a grow lamp over it and that helped.  Because of the low light, the leaves became huge, each one was bigger than my hand.  Then the leaves began to fall and I realized it was not getting enough drainage.  Too wet of soil is a big enemy of avocados and can be lethal!  I fixed the problem but it wasn't in enough time to keep from every leaf falling off.  All we had was bare stubs and avocados are not deciduous trees.  We moved to the house we live in now.  We put it by a Southern exposure patio door and in about 2 weeks it sent out leaf shoots and was all leafed out by the time it got warm enough to set it outside.  It has been re potted several times to give it more room for the roots.  We have a greenhouse we put it in the winter and it likes that better than be putting it in the house.  Oregon winters are too cold and too wet for it to survive outside.  This spring we had another scare.  When Rich set the tree outside, he sat it in some mud that blocked the drainage holes and I didn't notice it and I watered and fertilized it too much.  Root rot began to set in!  I went a bought a big pot with large drainage holes on the bottom side, so that they wouldn't get plugged again.  We trimmed off all the rotted roots and put a lot of fresh soil in it.  We had kind of a cool wet spring, so it just sat there with yellowish green leaves, looking very sad.  I worried about it and even shed tears, thinking it would not recover and we would lose our beautiful Married tree that has been with us through so many things. But by late June, things began to turn around and it began sending out new growth!  I was thrilled.  It now is sending out it's second growth spurt.  It usually only has one growth spurt during the summer.  So, it is so happy and it makes Rich and I smile every time we see it.  Rich took some pictures of it on Saturday.  Maybe we will have avocados to harvest off of it one day and that will be a celebration all of its own!

Mac had to get in the action too!

Peaches, Peaches, Sweet Peaches

Mary and I went peach picking on Thursday morning.  We went to a beautiful family owned orchard out in the country.  We picked the Clear Haven variety and they were so sweet and yummy!  The trees were loaded.  The Mary and her sweet little friend had so much fun helping us pick the peaches.  Now we have two lovely boxes of peaches sitting on our kitchen table.  They smell so good.  We are going to make some peach jam and then freeze the rest to make cobblers with them later.

Now that is a happy face! lol

Weakness

I had a very unusual and scary thing happen to me a few weeks back.  It was in the evening when I was putting Mary to bed.  I had been experiencing a lot of tiredness and just chalked it up to taking care of the yards, Mary and our 4 month old puppy.  When I was reading Mary a book before bed, I experience a wave of exhaustion that drained all my strength.  I didn't finish the book and told Mary we would finish it tomorrow night.  I tucked her in and she went to sleep.  I went to the living room to tell Rich good night and he said I looked really pale.  I told him I didn't feel right and I needed to go to bed.  That was at 8:30 and he came to bed around 11.  I woke up when he got into bed, he said a few things and I felt like I was going to faint while laying in bed.  I became very frightened and my heart began to race and I felt like I was having a hard time breathing.  Rich called the paramedics because he thought I was having a heart attack.  When they got there most of what I was experiencing passed.  They checked my blood pressure and heart rate and it was normal.  I decided at that point that I didn't need to go to the hospital and they checked one more time and then left.  The next day I made an appointment with the doctor to be checked.  I had to wait for the weekend to pass.  I just rested most of the time and took it easy.  I did experience some weakness again, but not like the first time.  I was very frightened not knowing what was wrong.  In the night my mind went to the most dark thoughts of cancer, leukemia, heart problems and I began to cry out to God.  I knew that he had promised to take care of me and that Rich and I would raise Mary but my world was being shaken from these symptoms I was having.  Then in the darkness and a still, small voice came to me and said, "Elena, don't you know my voice?"  I said, "Yes, Lord, I know it as I have heard it when I was waiting for my husband and you gave the timing and I heard it when I was waiting for a baby and you gave me the timing and reassured me when I was pregnant with Mary that she was your work and would be healthy and serve you all her days."  Then he said so sweetly, you are going to be alright, this is not unto death and you will be fine."  Peace entered my heart and I fell asleep.  When I went to the doctor that next morning they took my blood pressure, did an EKG and also listened to my heart.  It was fine.  The doctor told me that I have a very strong heart.  The next day after I had fasted they drew my blood to test it.  That Friday I met with the doctor and found out I was anemic.  My blood sugar, cholesterol, thyroid and other things were all normal.  So, he said I need to eat an iron rich diet and take my vitamins.  I had stopped taking my multivitamins a while back.  I just go busy and forgot to take them.  He will check my blood in 6 weeks to see if the anemia is gone.  After my appointment I went to the store and bought spinach and chicken livers and we had them for dinner.  I have been eating an iron rich diet for the last 2 weeks and taking my vitamins and being more careful to get some rest during the day instead of running for one thing to the next.  I feel much better!  I am eating healthier, drinking more water and getting plenty of rest.  The Lord is good and is taking care of me and Rich and our sweet Mary girl!

Church BBQ

We had a lovely Sunday afternoon at our church barbecue.  Our church puts it on every fall.  This is the first year we have been able to attend.  The church provides all the food and fun.  They had a rock climbing wall for the older kids, a bouncy house for the little ones and a dunk tank that the pastors sat in and took turns being dunked.  The kids really loved that too.  Mary had a blast in the bouncy house and she left happily with a balloon.

We love our church!
