Rest in Peace my Little Fish

Saturday evening was a sad moment in our house.  Our Angel Fish, Bolo, died.  She began having some trouble swimming upright about a week ago.  I changed some of the water, vacuumed the gravel and got a better filter.  She seemed to perk up but on Friday she stopped eating and I knew she wasn't going to make it.  Here is a picture of her.  She was a pretty good size.  Her body was about 3 inches long and with her beautiful fins she was 6 inches high.  We had her about 3 years and had gotten attached to her.

She was always so happy to see you whenever you walked up to the tank.  She would come right over wagging her tail fins and would get so excited for food.  She was a great little mama and laid several thousand eggs over her lifetime.  We didn't have the right conditions to raise the fry.  We let her try to raise them several times but each time they all died when they got to the free swimming stage.  She would get so upset and sulk in the corner of the tank when they died that I decide not to let her keep the eggs.  I would just wash them away and put the stone back.  She handled that much better.  She just looked so happy and proud when her little babies hatched and would swim in a cloud around her.   I had read that Angel Fish are one of the most intelligent aquarium fish and I believe it after having her.  Her mate, Goodie, is a beautiful fish but he lacked all the natural instincts of raising baby fish.  This infuriated her and she began to hate him for eating her eggs and babies.  We had to take him out of the tank to let her try and raise the fertilized eggs.  After her losing several batches of babies she hated him so much, she wouldn't let him near the eggs, even to fertilize them. To me that was pretty smart for a fish.

On Saturday afternoon we went to Olive Garden to eat dinner with some friends and when we got back she had dragged herself into the small cave we have in the aquarium and breathed her last.  When Rich reached in and took her limp body out of the water and put her in the plastic bag I was holding, my eyes filled with tears.  I took her outside and buried her in our garden.  It was just so sad.  Mary came up to me seeing my tears and said, "Mommy, I am going to really miss that fish.  What did you do with her outside?"  I said, "I buried her in our garden."  She asked, Why?"  I said, "Because when something dies and the spark of life that God gives them leaves they are put into the ground and they return to dust."  I reminded her of our Bible reading of creation and how God formed Adam out of the dust of the earth and then breathed the breath of life into him and he became a living soul.  So too God breathed the life into us and all the animals.  So me, Daddy, you, Mackie and all our fish have life that was given to us by God.  For people when our spark of life leaves our bodies will be buried and our souls will go to heaven.  She was OK with that.  We have talked about heaven before so she knew what I was talking about.  It was a very sad moment when our little fish died and I still cry a little when I think of her and don't see her in the tank when I go to feed the other fish but I am thankful for that moment to think about our mortality and talk about it with Mary.  I know the Lord cares about the animals for it says that he sees when the sparrow falls.  All creation groans for the coming of the Lord and the ending of all sickness, suffering and death.

Potato Soup

Yesterday was a chilly winter's day that was perfect for soup.  I was reading one of my favorite blogs, Carol's Heirloom Collection.  She had a potato soup recipe posted that sounded so great.  The only thing is that I didn't have all the ingredients, so I had to do some substituting.  It turned out really good and you can tell by the second picture that it made my family really happy!

Here is my recipe. You can go to Carol's blog and get her recipe. It sounded so great and she said it came out really good too.

Potato Soup

5 large potatoes that are washed but not peeled.
5 3/4 cups turkey stock
1 medium red onion
2 tsp of minced garlic
2 cups sour cream
1 Tbls Mrs. Dash
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp Johnny's Garlic Spread and seasoning

Dice the potatoes and onion is 1/2 inch cubes.  Put all the ingredients in the crock pot and cook on high for 6 hours.  Use a hand held blender and blend the soup into a creamy consistency.  Serve with a cheese garnish.

Saturday Night Bath

We give our little Mackie a bath on Saturday nights.  When he was a puppy he didn't care much for his bath but the last while he has changed.  Last Saturday night Rich said to him, "Hey Mackie do you want your bath.  He ran down the hall and went back to our bathroom.  When I caught up with him and went into the bathroom this is what I saw.

He loves his bath.  He is waiting for me to come and wet him down and soap him up!  It is so funny.  I have never had a dog that loves his bath.  I have always had to chase them down, find where they are hiding and get them in the tub.  He even gets upset if I am giving Mary a bath or I am taking a shower and he is not getting his bath.  He sits outside the bathroom door and just cries.  He is such a little character and is always cracking us up.  What are your experiences on giving your dog a bath?  Do they love it or hate it?

Thank you all for your lovely comments about our lamps and doilies.  I think we will be going with the pastel colored doily.

Crocheted Doilies

I had fun yesterday crocheting some different doilies that we are going to include as a free gift with the sale of each of our lamps.  I am so proud of my husbands handiwork.  He is such a wonderful artisan and I look forward to the day we open our E-bay store!  Which doily to you like best?

Street Dreams

Mary has had fun spending some of the money Grandma and Grandpa gave her for Christmas on toys.  She has gotten a couple of really cool ones.  The first one is this little dancing kitty.  It is called a FurReal Friend. I just thought it was the cutest little thing when we got it out of the box and she was playing with it at home.  It even inspired her to do a little break dance.  Again she has not had any lessons from me or anyone about break dancing.  She most likely has seen it on TV at one time or another.  But our little girl just loves to dance and listen to all kinds of music.  So I posted a video of her telling about her little dancing friend and also of her dancing with it.  To complete her "Street Dreams" she was down at Sears with me and saw some brightly colored T-Shirts that were $10 and it included a small skate board.  She fell in love with it.  So, I said OK.  The only rule is she can't stand up on it.  She has had a lot of fun sitting on it and laying with her tummy on it, scooting around the kitchen floor.  She is our dreaming little girl: horses, puppies, skateboarding, flying ...  She just loves to have wonderful dreams of things she wants to do and to learn!

Saying Goodbye to our Christmas Tree

We had so much fun selecting our fresh Christmas tree this year.  Rich called up a U-Cut Christmas tree farm and asked them what was the most fragrant tree.  We had a fake tree for the last couple of years and this year we wanted that wonderful fresh evergreen smell to fill our home and remind us of Christmas when we were children.  We also wanted to make memories for Mary as she grew older.  The guy told Rich that the Grand Fir was the most fragrant.  We looked it up on the internet and got all the details on it.  So, we went and cut our own tree the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  We were so hoping it would last until Christmas.  We keep our house pretty warm and the air is quite dry here right now.  The other 2 times that I had bought a fresh Christmas tree from a lot, it was a crispy critter the day after Christmas and it left a huge pile of needles all the way to the door when we took it out.  Well, much to our surprise and joy our tree lasted 2 days short of 7 weeks!  We put it up in the living room in water the day we cut it.  We did a 7-up and a tiny bit of bleach mixture with water.  It was so fragrant and I added to it by putting cinnamon pine cones on it.  Mary loved it so much she made up a little song about our tree.  I posted the video of her singing.  The last picture was taken yesterday when Rich cut off the branches and put it in the green recycle bin.  I had taken all the decorations off of it the day after New Years but we just let it stand in our living room.  It was just so pretty.  It still was so fresh when we took it out.  There was only a small handful of needles on the floor.  I think we will cut a Grand Fir every year for our tree.  The other nice thing is that it looked so natural, like we had gone out in the woods and got it.  It wasn't all pruned up and artificial looking.  We were just so blessed to enjoy a small part of God's creation and think how wonderful He has made our world!

BBQ Sauce and Ribs

Rich has come up with another wonderful recipe.  He said he was taking a nap and as he was starting to fall asleep he thought up this recipe for a BBQ sauce.  You never know when the moment of inspiration will hit you!  LOL  Well he made some amazing ribs for Sunday lunch and used his BBQ sauce.  They were out of this world.  Rich pressure cooks the ribs first then puts on the sauce and then broils them.  The meat is so tender it falls off the bone and then the flavor is so great.  Here is the recipe for his BBQ sauce.

1-15 oz can of tomato sauce
1/4 cup Yoshida's maranade
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup cooking oil
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 Tblsp honey
1 Tblsp Worcestershire Sauce
1 Tblsp Balsamic Vinegar
1 Tblsp Chipolte Tabasco
Pinch of black pepper

Simmer for 15 minutes and then let it cool and it is ready for use.

Memory Blanket

For Christmas this year we gave Mary a memory blanket.  It is a fleece blanket with special pictures of her getting her puppy this summer.  She had been wanting a puppy for so very long and she was so excited to finally get our little Mackie.

She loves her blanket and sleeps with it every night.  I had it made by Kodak Gallery and they did such a great job!

Here she is with her little friend now.  He loves toast!
There he is being Mister Hopeful.  She is asking him,  "Do you want some boy?"  After she was finished she gave him a bite.  He is very patient to wait for his treat!

So Happy!

Mac is so happy!  Today he gets his stitches out and no more cone.
