My Home, My Heritage

My home and heritage came from two loving parents and a half acre piece of earth not far from where I live now. It was in the countryside of Oregon near a small historic town. My mother was from Southern California and my dad from Kansas. They met in a small Bible School in Portland, Oregon. After living in Portland and in Southern California they ended up in Southern Oregon where I was born.

My folks had a small trailer (8 ft wide and 22 ft long) that they lived in. It was on the land they purchased shortly before I was born. There were 4 children in my family, my oldest sister was 9, my next sister was 7, my brother was 14 months and I was newborn. Yes, we all lived in an 8 ft wide and 22 ft long trailer. My father did add a small bedroom and dining room a little later on the side of the trailer. A recession was going on there and my father could not find steady work. He was a blue collar worker having done a bunch of different things, but jobs were scarce. My parents plan was to build a house, but that was put on hold for a few years. Mom said is was the hardest financial struggle that they had gone through in their whole married life. They lived from paycheck to paycheck, counting every penny and making it stretch as far as it would go. Many times my mom only had 50 cents to pay on the hospital bill that they had gotten when I was born. We only had simple gifts for birthdays and Christmas, many were handmade, my father did not own a rototiller, so he hand spaded the land to keep all the weeds down. Many times he had to walk to the jobs he had because he had no money for gas and he would have to wire the soles on his shoes because there was no money for new ones. Though our material possessions were small, our joy was great! My folks loved each other and us kids so much. They were so happy to take us to church and be with God’s people. Mom said that when they would load us kids up in the car to go to church that she felt like she had 4 million bucks! Her heart was full of love and hope in the Lord.

A plywood mill opened up and my dad got a job there. It was a good steady job. So they were able to get a loan ($8000) to build our house. My dad laid out the plans on a white piece of butcher paper and got a lot of books from the library on how to build. He also had grown up on a farm and had learned to be handy with a hammer at a young age. So, they began the work. It was mainly in the evenings and weekends. As mom had to care for my brother and I while my older sisters were at school and my dad worked. They had many adventures in faith in this endeavor to build a house. When my dad began to build the trusses for the roof, he didn’t know anything about the crown of the wood. A man came by who was a builder the very day Dad began. He asked him if he knew about the crown and Dad didn’t. He explained it to him, my father was able to build the trussed correctly, so that they would not warp and a flat sturdy roof would be the result. Every time they needed new supplies, they made a list, prayed over it and when they got the paper with the sale ads for the week, everything they needed was on sale! My dad was going to start out sawing all the wood by hand for our house and a neighbor came over and gave him a new electric handsaw. Told him to use it as long as he needed it. Dad wore out the saw by the end of the whole building project, but he had plenty of money at that time to buy the neighbor a new saw. One time when my dad was doing the wiring in the house, something stumped him. He wanted to make a 3 way switch and didn’t know how to do it. He prayed and asked God to help him. He began talking out loud to himself on how to do it and followed what came out of his mouth but it wasn’t from his knowledge. It worked perfectly! A similar thing happened to my mom when my dad had her doing the taping of the dry wall. Dad had gotten general instructions from the building supply store and told mom. She tried it and made a huge mess and it looked terrible. She sat down in total frustration and asked God to help her. She got up began to talk to herself, ideas came into her head that had never been there and she was able to do the job without a problem. Several people saw her taping job and they said they had seen professional work that was not as good as Mom’s.

They were able to build a small 4 bedroom home in 2 years and stayed within their budget of $8000! So at the age of 4 years old, I remember putting all my things in a cardboard box and walking with my brother and sisters into our new house. I can remember twirling around in the middle of the house and being thrilled that I could do that with out touching a thing!! We were home and I lived there all my growing up years, feeling safe, warm and loved. My folks had not only built a house but they had built a home, resting on a strong foundation ... our Lord, Jesus Christ. I grew up in the knowledge of Him and for that I am most grateful!

Books, Books, Books

I went to Goodwill this weekend and I hit a gold mine. I bought a whole stack of books for Mary for the price of one new book! She was delighted. We now have wonderful new material for our bedtime story time!

This is one of her favorites

because it has a puppy that looks like her Tutu!

This book tells you all you wanted to know about cats!

I remember reading this book as a child and liking it very much!

This book is all about the Okefenokee swamp in Southern Georgia and Northern Florida. It has beautiful illustrations and tells all about the wildlife and plants that grow there.

This is about a lonely fish that finally makes friends. Again, it has great illustrations!

A fun sparkly book!

This one answers all kinds of questions about bugs.

This is Mary's all time favorite!

This is a video of Mary and I reading.

Pink Pajamas

Last week I made Mary another pair of pajamas. She liked her Christmas pajamas so well that I decided to make her another pair. I had enough material left over to make her a heart shaped pillow for her bed. I put a little pocket on the back so she can use it to put her teeth in for the tooth fairy when she gets older:) She thought it was a great pocket to put her beloved Tutu in. She just loves that little stuffed dog and takes it every where. She talks to him and sleeps with him. If she has a hard to time settling down for her nap, I tell her that Tutu has to sleep too, so she had better hold him still so he can go to sleep. She does and in the process she falls asleep. She has him listen to the story I read to her before she goes to bed at night and he has to pay attention too. Sometimes she pretends that Tutu is hiding and she hears him barking and then she goes and finds him. He is usually hidden under her favorite pink blankets! Oh how I love the imagination of a child!

Have blessed weekend dear friends!

Well Then go to ...

This is an amazing story that my mom told to us kids of an event that occurred when she was a teenager. My mother spent most of her growing up years in Southern California, in a community called North Hollywood from 1936 until 1948. Her family attended an Assembly of God church there. When my mother was a teenager there came a time of great excitement in the church. The mayor was coming to visit one of their services on a Sunday evening. The people’s hearts were on fire for the Lord and all they could think about is wanting the Mayor to get saved. So, the service was very carefully planned and people were praying and asking God how they could speak to the Mayor to bring him to the knowledge of his need for a Savior. That special night arrived and everyone came, including a member of the congregations that was special. His name was Ray and he had attended the church with his parents and sister since he was a baby. The special thing about Ray was that he had grown to a man but his mind only advanced to that of an 7 or 8 year old. He loved the Lord with all his heart. His parents could easily get him to do the things he needed to do as they would ask him what Jesus would want him to do and he would think about it and then he would comply. He was a very big men with the heart of a child. He was a friendly soul and loved to give big bear hugs and hand shakes to all the church members. Well Ray had heard all the prayers and was excited to see the Mayor. He made his way out to the front lobby where the Mayor was coming in. All the people greeted the Mayor with great respect and gave him a warm welcome. Ray waited his turn in line to meet the Mayor. When he shook his hand he said, “Are you saved? Do you believe that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior and have you asked him to forgive you of all your sins?” The mayor hesitated and looked at the young man realizing his handicap and said, “ Very calmly and sincerely, “No I do not believe in Jesus as my Savior.” Ray looked at him in the eye and said in a very dead pan way, “Well, then go to hell” and walked off. Everyone that heard that was crushed. They thought all hope was lost and that Ray is his simple ways had dashed any hope of reaching the Mayor. The Mayor attended the service and left. The people left the church that night feeling defeated. At 3:00 am the pastor got a knock on his door. It was the Mayor looking very distressed and asked if he could come in. The pastor began to talk with him and that very night led him in the sinner’s prayer and he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. When the pastor asked the Mayor what it was that changed his heart, he said, “It was that young man’s words, Well then go to hell, that kept running over and over in his mind when he laid down to go to bed. His heart became so troubled that he had to find the pastor and get his life right with God!”

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the Lord.
As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and
my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:8-9

Pillows and Pixie Dust

I did a little sewing this week. Mary's grandparents gave her a Tinkerbell blanket for Christmas. So, I decided to make her some pillows to match. I found some green tie dye fleece material that matched the blanket. She loves them and they were super easy to make! I was stuffing some couch pillows between the bed and the wall to keep her from knocking into the wall at night. They didn't work too well and kept falling over. The long round pillow works great for that. She had fun rolling it around the living room floor for a while before we put it on her bed.

Sleep tight my little Mary girl and don't let the bed bugs bite!

Bunny Love

My sister made this most adorable little friend for Mary as a Christmas gift. Mary just loves her. Hmmm... I think a I see an Easter portrait in her future with this sweet little bunny. My sister just amazes me with her sewing talent and close attention to detail. I'm keeping Bunny as a special toy so that Mary will have her when she is older too and can appreciate all the love filled stitching in her!

Tutu is a little worried in this shot that he will be replaced! Not to worry Tutu, Mary loves you very much!

Bunny says, "Ado" and so do I! Have a happy and blessed day!
